Chapter Thirteen

For lunch we ride our bikes to a food truck park on the island. After ordering from different places for the main meal, we meet up at the ice cream truck for dessert. I'm halfway through my ice cream sandwich when I notice how quickly it's melting, making a bit of a mess on my fingers. It's not just mine, either—a trail of ice cream dribbles down Darcy's cone, then her arm, and I find myself staring as she chases it with her tongue. She catches the dribble when it's halfway down her wrist and licks her way up to the crease between her pointer finger and thumb, then envelops the delicate flap of skin there in her mouth.

I'm jealous. I want her tongue working on me like that, I want her to suck my skin with that kind of enthusiasm. I lick my lips as I watch her, and then she glances up and catches me staring.

There's heat in her stare and I should look away but I can't, and she doesn't either. Instead, our eyes stay trained on each other while her tongue licks her skin clean and then moves on to her cone and fuck. It's too much. The idea that Rafe might be right, that the attraction isn't one-sided, resurfaces. It seems almost certain now.

I'm about to do something stupid, say something stupid, tip my hand, when a fat raindrop hits my nose.

Rafe grabs my hand and pulls me under the awning of one of the food trucks, wrapping his arms around me so that I'm as covered and out of the rain as possible.

His voice is quiet in my ear. "Do you want me to talk you into it or out of it?"

I pull away to look at him, and his expression is matter-of-fact. Curious, but calm.

"I don't know," I say, which feels like an admission in and of itself. Because really, I'm supposed to know whether or not I want to kiss someone other than my husband. Whether I want to strip my best friend naked and have her writhing beneath me. Whether I want someone new to make me come.

"I want you to think about it. And if you decide yes, know that I fully support you. If you decide no, I'll happily volunteer to let you take all your energy out on me." He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear adding, "And no matter what you decide, I'll love you more than life itself."

I study him for a beat, then kiss him, because that's the only acceptable response to a statement so kind and loving and thoughtful.

The owner of the food truck interrupts us, leaning out the order window.

"We're going to close up. Rain's going to continue for another hour or two."

The four of us look at each other, because we're obviously not going to huddle under cover for that long.

"I can ride back and go get the car," Alec offers.

I shake my head. "It's not raining that hard. Why don't we all just ride back together.
